Unit Information

Unit 1 is about setting a career destination. The purpose is to motivate students to think beyond high school and K12 transition. It sets the stage for students to explore the need for accommodations as a way to achieve future goals.

It is based on fundamentals of career exploration, which starts with career personality types. Career personality types are based on the work of psychologist Dr. John Holland. Six types can be explored in combination. The combination produces your Holland Code (RIASEC code). The Holland Code is embedded in free career search websites maintained by the U.S. Department of Labor, including O*Net, My Next Move, and CareerOneStop. The lessons in this unit use alternate wording for the original Holland types.

Students assess their career personality type using different online survey tools. Some tools produce a report with matching career options. The matching options help students search within a narrower list of career choices. They explore a career choice using the free websites. This exploration could be supplemented with paid websites if they are available in your school.

The end goal is for students to choose one career to analyze in the next unit. This unit is a very short version of career exploration that could be much more extended. But we know extended career exploration does not always happen in schools. We wanted to make sure students were exposed to a least a small dose of future planning. The exploration process is more important than the career choice. Support students to choose a career even if they are not sure what they want to do.
