Unit 6: How do my accommodations change over time?
Unit 6 is about future changes that can affect accommodations. This unit is short and not concrete. So many future changes are possible.
The need for accommodations changes when the environment is different because accommodations are essentially changes to external factors. Four external factors can affect the need for accommodations:
- Change in setting (the context that shapes task demands)
- Change in activities (task demands)
- Change in laws and rules (how you get accommodations and what accommodations are allowed)
- Change in resources (how you pay for personal assistance or assistive technology)
At the end, students are asked to imagine how these external factors might affect their future accommodations. You will need to work with your student to individualize their reflections on the future. It’s okay if students have trouble making concrete connections to these abstract concepts. This unit sets the stage for considering assistive technology (Unit 7) because personal assistance is more difficult to get in postsecondary settings.
